$242 million in funding for Cape Fear Memorial Bridge replacement
The Biden Administration announced $242 million worth of grant support for the replacement of the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge in Wilmington. The nearly half-billion-dollar project has been a contentious issue in Southeastern North Carolina for quite some time. The Cape Fear Memorial Bridge, which opened in 1969 and carries over 70,000 cars and trucks every day, is reaching the end of its usable life according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT). NCDOT conducted a massive preservation project in January of this year to replace both the bridge deck and stringers to extend the bridge’s life.

North Carolina police warn residents of ‘aggressive’ alligators amid nesting season
Police in North Carolina are warning locals to steer clear of female alligators during this time of year. Officials with the Sunset Beach Police Department took to Facebook to post a PSA about suspected alligator nests. “Nearly all alligators become sexually mature by the time they reach approximately 7 feet in length, although females can reach maturity at 6 feet. A female may require 10-15 years and a male 8-12 years to reach these lengths. Courtship begins in early April, and mating occurs in May or June,” the post said. Turtle nesting season off to a slow start
Oak Island’s 2024 turtle season is off to a slow start, but those familiar with the annual visitors know Mother Nature can change things in a hurry. Oak Island Sea Turtle Protection Program (OISTPP), an all-volunteer nonprofit, registered the first nest – of not only its season but the state’s – on May 6, and as of June 28 had reported 47 totals finds so far in 2024, all loggerheads. OISTPP co-coordinator Suzan Bell said the current number of nests is lining with up with 2020, when there were a total of 96 for the year. OITC has reported more than 100 nests every year since.

Blue Economy Index underperforms benchmarks in June
The University of North Carolina Wilmington said Wednesday that its monthly measure of ocean-related economic activities underperformed its closest benchmarks last month. The index that measures economic activities in the oceans fell by 3.71% in June. It was the first time in two months that the index underperformed its closest benchmarks, the MSCI All World Index, the S&P 500, and the S&P 500 Industrials.
