Marlins swim season coming to an end
Rain washed out the scheduled final home swim meet on Saturday of the Southport Marlins. They now will prepare for the Wilmington Swim League Championships, set for Sunday and Monday. It was only a month ago the Marlins had their first home meet. Here are photos of some of the Marlins in action from that meet.
Overpass work to detour Long Beach Road
One of the first significant road closures in the N.C. Highway 211 widening project is just around the corner as work continues to remain on schedule. According to Josh Pratt, a resident engineer with the N.C. Department of Transportation, the project is 46% complete and the extensive utility work is approximately 85% finished. Grading work on what will be the future westbound lane of 211 has been done and Pratt said paving of the two-lane road started last week.
Residents get tour of BSL's new fire, rescue station
Boiling Spring Lakes showed off its new 12,200-square-foot fire and rescue station with an open house for the community on Saturday. The station officially opened earlier this year on N.C. 87 (3059 George II Highway) next to Dollar General. With bunk rooms and living quarters available for the fire and rescue staff, the city can now house someone at the station 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to improve response times, said Chief Theresa Tickle.

Tuesday night fire on the island results in total loss of home
Oak island Fire Department responded to a house fire Tuesday night that resulted in a total loss. OIFD was dispatched to a structure fire on NE 42nd Street shortly after 9:30 p.m. and arrived to find a home fully engulfed in flames. Initial reports stated that two occupants who were inside the home at 210 NE 42nd St. smelled smoke, went outside to investigate and discovered fire on the underside of the house.

Oak Island: Sand for sale at a bargain price
The Army Corp of Engineers offered Oak Island Town Council a deal last month that it couldn’t pass up. As part of its bi-annual dredging of the Wilmington Harbor Inner Ocean Bar, the Corps will have access to a lot of sand, something Oak Island can’t get enough of in recent years. That project is scheduled to go out for bid in September and Oak Island was presented an opportunity to purchase some of the sand for bargain prices.

Russell Lionel Rupp, age 78, of Southport, North Carolina passed away on July 6, 2024 from complications due to Parkinson’s disease. Russ was born in Ephrata, Pennsylvania and was the first in his family to attend college.
