Herd of Endangered Manatees Spotted Along NC Coast: Beachgoers Urged to Stay Away
Officials are now warning beach goers to be on the lookout for a herd of endangered manatees that were just spotted along the North Carolina coast. According to Paws & Claws Animal Hospital, these manatees were spotted in the Intracoastal waterways between Hampstead and Wrightsville Beach. The gentle giants were observed feeding near docks and banks, areas known for heavy waterway traffic.

A herd of manatees has been spotted this week in the Inter-coastal Waterway between Hampstead and Wrightsville Beach. Officials with a local animal hospital say they have been seen feeding by docks and banks where waterway traffic tends to be heavier, and because they are tough to see above water, they’re asking boaters to watch carefully for the “sea cows” that visit North Carolina when the water warms up.

‘Game changer.’ NC gets big federal grant to help replace Cape Fear Memorial Bridge
North Carolina will receive $242 million from the federal government to help replace the aging Cape Fear Memorial Bridge in Wilmington. The money comes from the big infrastructure bill Congress passed in late 2021. The grant, from the U.S. Department of Transportation, was announced Friday by Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper and one of North Carolina’s Republican U.S. senators, Thom Tillis, who voted for the bill.

Feds award $252M grant to fund CF Memorial Bridge replacement
NEW HANOVER COUNTY — A major artery connecting motorists entering Wilmington from across the state has received a major boost from the federal department of transportation. The Biden administration announced a $242 million grant — the most allowed under the Bridge Investment Program, under the Biden Infrastructure Law — has been awarded to replace the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge. The replacement has been estimated to cost around $485 million for a 135-foot fixed overpass along the Cape Fear River. It would be able to accommodate ships and built with an additional two lanes.
