    Kura Sushi opens second Long Island restaurant

    Kura Sushi, a Japanese restaurant chain that features a revolving sushi bar, opened its second Long Island location earlier this month.

    The new 3,000-square-foot automated eatery is located in the Smith Haven Mall. The company’s first Long Island restaurant opened in a 3,321-square-foot space in the Country Glen Center at 47 Old Country Road in Carle Place a year ago.

    Automation is central to the operations of Kura Sushi, where a two-layer conveyer system circulates throughout the restaurant bringing food from the kitchen direct to tables. Drinks are delivered tableside bya delivery robot programmed by human servers.

    For every five plates inserted into tableside slots, a Japanese animation appears on a tableside tablet andfor every 15 plates inserted, guests receive a surprisefrom itsBikkura Pon Prize Systemlocated at each table.

    Founded in Japan, Kura Sushi’s U.S. headquarters is located in Irvine, Calif. The publicly traded company now has more than 500 locations worldwide, including 64in the U.S. Besides Long Island, the chain’s other New York restaurants are located in Flushing and Scarsdale.
