At Washington universities, enrollment questions persist
Last year, Eastern Washington University unveiled plans to revamp campus housing. One residence hall, Morrison, was demolished last summer; another, Dryden, is slated for the same fate this winter. Both will soon have newer buildings in their footprints. Even then, one of the newest halls, Brewster, has been unused for several years, according to the school.

Last year, Eastern Washington University unveiled plans to revamp campus housing. One residence hall, Morrison, was set to be torn down last summer, however demolition hasn’t yet happened and university police have used it for active-shooter training. Another, Dryden, is slated for demolition this winter. There are plans to erect new buildings once they are demolished.

The Dean’s List for Eastern Washington University’s (EWU) spring quarter has just been announced. The EWU Dean's List is released after every fall, winter and spring quarter. An undergraduate student who earns 12 quality hours (QHRS) and receives a GPA of 3.5 or better is placed on the Dean's List. If the student has placed a directory restriction on their records the name will not be released for publication.

Federal Grant For City Of Palouse Discussed During Tuesday Workshop
There will be a public workshop Tuesday in Palouse to discuss a grant for the city from the federal government. The Environmental Protection Agency has allocated a grant to Palouse from its Building Blocks for Sustainable Communities program. The funding will help the city pursue sustainable development strategies. The effort will try to revitalize Main Street, preserve historical resources, create affordable housing and invest in infrastructure. Tuesday’s workshop is from 9:00 to 5:00 at the Palouse Community Center. Federal officials will be on hand with city staff to discuss the grant.
Volunteers Extinguish Field Fire West Of Colfax
Volunteer Firefighters in Central Whitman County extinguished a field fire along State Route 26 West of Colfax Monday morning. The fire burned in Whitman County Fire District 13 out of Onecho. Volunteers from District 6 out of Endicott, D8 from LaCrosse and D11 out of Colfax helped battle the blaze. The fire burned about 40 acres of standing wheat on Penewawa Road. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Public Meeting Tuesday Regarding Development Of Whitman County Community Wildfire Protection Plan
Whitman County officials will host a public meeting Tuesday about the effort to develop a Community Wildfire Protection Plan. The document helps communities prepare, respond and recover from wildfires. The plan will also make Whitman County eligible for millions of dollars from the federal government for wildfire protection and response. Tuesday’s meeting is from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Public Service Building on Main Street in Colfax. The plan will be opened for public comment early next year.
Veteran pays kindness forward
MALDEN — A local veteran was recognized for assisting a veteran’s widow in Okanogan County by Congress members during Malden’s Town Council on June 11. Veterans aid for Rep. Dan Newhouse Hank Cramer and Veteran’s Aide for Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers Doug Huff presented Malden resident Mark Butler letters of appreciation from both members of congress at the town council meeting.
