I have been leading photo workshops in the Palouse area for the past 15 years, and I can probably count on two hands the number of times I've had amazing skies like this year. Typically, the skies are clear and sunny, providing some bright light and great low-angle light before sunset. However, when clouds came around, the creative possibilities opened up dramatically, and on this day, I took full advantage of this opportunity.
Haunted Palouse Returns This Fall-Meeting To Recruit Volunteers Thursday Night
Haunted Palouse is returning this fall and organizers are hosting a meeting Thursday to recruit volunteers. The event was canceled last year to build up volunteers for a return in 2024. Thursday’s meeting to discuss volunteering for Haunted Palouse starts at 6:30 at the Palouse Community Center. The event is a fundraiser for the community of Palouse.

Driver cited for unsecured hay load
CHENEY – A Washington State Patrol trooper cited a hay truck driver June 18 on multiple load violations. The trooper observed a semi-truck carrying the unsecured load of round bales on State Route 904, a state patrol report said. Upon noticing there were no straps securing the load, the trooper issued an out-of-service violation for endangering other people on the roads.
Rhoderick McIntosh
Rhoderick D. “Rhod” McIntosh, 83, of Colfax, passed away Saturday, June 8, 2024, at Whitman Hospital in Colfax from complications of Parkinson’s. Rhod was born July 30, 1940, in Tammany, Idaho, to Donald and Nicatie (Baugh) McIntosh. The family moved to Pullman where he spent his elementary years, later moving to Kamiak Butte to farm with his grandfather and father. After graduating from Colfax High School in 1958, he attended Wenatchee Junior College where he played football and received his associates degree. He then played football for a short time at Washington State University until he suffered a career-ending concussion. While at WSU he met his future bride on a blind date, Barbara J. Hesse, and married her in Pullman on Dec. 16, 1961, in the middle of a snow storm. Together they raised their family on the farm he later took over from his father.

Janice Marie (Draper) Fanning
Janice Marie (Draper) Fanning of Cheney passed peacefully into Heaven on June 11, 2024, with her children by her side. During her last day, she had 22 family members share time with her loading her with love and the sweetest of good-byes. Jan kept her wit and humor throughout the day. Son, John, baptized Mom while surrounded by family. This was her wish.
Gordon Oliver Young
Gordon Oliver Young, 85, passed away May 23, 2024, with his family by his side. Gordon was born Sept. 13, 1938, in Orchard, Neb., to Roy and Neva Mae Young. He ventured west and married Priscila Brash and settle in the Cheney-Spangle area, where they raised two boys. Life changes and the couple went separate ways and Gordon married Sharon Blunt, who still resides at the family home.

Eastern plans volleyball fundraiser
CHENEY –Eastern Washington University's volleyball program is staging a fundraiser July 13 on the school's practice fields. Participation directly contributes to the growth and success of the Eastern volleyball program. These funds will assist in funding recruiting needs, training equipment, team travel, facility enhancements and other immediate needs for the program.
Fireworks Ban in Cheney
CHENEY - As today is Independence Day, residents of Cheney are reminded that the use of fireworks within city limits is strictly prohibited. According to the city municipal code, the personal use of any fireworks that produce noise including sparklers, or have the potential to cause a fire is a misdemeanor offense.
Brush fire breaks out in Cheney
CHENEY – The city Fire Department with the assistance of Fire District 3 combated a brush fire near West First and Washington streets in Cheney on June 23. Around 3:30 p.m., both departments along with the Department of Natural Resources firefighters, quickly responded to the fire as the flames were encroaching around the surrounding area.
Delays expected through Thursday on US 195 near Spangle
SPANGLE, Wash. – Travelers using the US 195 near Spangle should prepare for delays due to crack sealing. According to the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), local crews will work on sealing cracks in the road between mileposts 69 and 80 between East Watt Road and South Cheney Plaza Road.
