Bicycle ride up Steptoe Butte to take place
TEKOA — A bicycle ride up Steptoe Butte is set for 9 a.m. this Saturday, June 29. Participants will meet at the Rosalia City Park on West 9th Street in Rosalia and will make a 52-mile trek on the backroads to Oakesdale before climbing the spiraling road up Steptoe Butte.
Albion receives grant for road work
ALBION — The town of Albion has received a grant to have road resurfacing done in mid-July. The method that will be used is called Otta Seal. According to the Transportation Improvement Board, Otta Seal is a process where a thick application of a specialty oil is laid down and then a medium of rock is poured over it. A road roller presses the gravel down and after a few weeks the excess gravel is swept away.

GARFIELD — Like most people, my husband, Blake, and I have a weekly routine—“going to town.” Grocery shopping is the main focus and, because of that, I’ve learned to be very attentive to “keeping a list and checking it twice.” Anything we neglect to pick up has to practically endure a court hearing to prove that it’s worthy of another 50-mile round trip. Gasoline, and occasionally, clothing shopping are included on our schedule, but other than the occasional jeans and t-shirt purchase, we rarely have a need for new fashion. Yes, placing an order on Amazon can be tempting, but we know that it’s up to us to support our local businesses and help ensure their survival.

Fire crews battling fire in Cheney
CHENEY, Wash. — Fire crews are on scene at a brush fire in Cheney. According to a Facebook post from the Spokane County Fire District 3, they are assisting the Cheney Fire Department at a fire near West 1st Street and Washington Street in Cheney that started around 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.

COLFAX — Washington State Route 26 will be reduced to one lane west of Colfax starting today. Washington State Department of Transportation will reduce Washington State Route 26 to one lane during construction of a passing lane — the westbound lane will be closed to traffic.
