Jax NAACP Wins at the 115th National Convention
The Jacksonville Branch ACT-SO Olympians went to Las Vegas, Nevada and competed among 1200 high school students in 32 categories from across the country. The home team brought home five medals in all categories. The medalists included: Alexa Akpabie (Dance: Traditional) – Silver; Ayviana Singh (Dramatic Arts: Acting)- Gold; Brea Carbert (Dance: Ballet)- Silver; Jahneen Alexander (Music Instrumental: Classical) – Gold; Kobi Dawes (Sculpture) – Bronze; Branch Life Member Charles Spencer won the Benjamin Hooks Keeper of the Flame Award; awarded for his outstanding participation in the labor movement. The Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics ACT-SO program was founded in 1978 by author and journalist Vernon Jarrett. The program is intended to provide recognition to young people who could demonstrate academic, scientific, and artistic achievement, allowing young people to gain recognition equal often achieved by entertainers and athletes.
1,100 fewer Duval students qualify for buses this school year
Duval school bus policy changes will affect less than 1% of Jacksonville’s public school students — but they will feel the change in a big way. When school starts next month, certain middle- and high-school students will no longer qualify for bus transportation because of a cost-cutting decision the School Board made in May. Previously, the district bused all students who lived outside a mile-and-a-half radius of their assigned school. In August, that will still be true for elementary students, but the determining distance for sixth through 12th graders will increase to 2 miles.
