No shortage of sunny and calm weather this weekend
The forecast remains sunny and dry through the weekend. Highs top out in the upper 70s today with plenty of sunshine and calm winds, a trend that will carry into Saturday and most of Sunday. Expect mild lows tonight in the upper 50s and a few passing clouds, especially for those adjacent to or downwind of the lake. Michiana breaks back into the 80s on Saturday as low pressure from the northwest begins to develop, signaling the return of increasing temperatures. Overall, a generally pleasant weekend of weather is in store for the area. Humidity won't be oppressive, but dewpoints will rise gradually Sunday onward. Cloudier skies persist into next week with chances for rain increasing Monday night and lasting through Wednesday.
Michiana Chronicles: Back to Basics, Eh?
Outside the motel, our old orange Honda hatchback was parked next to a much taller and shinier bright red pickup truck. The owner walked toward his vehicle preceded by his hairy black and white sheepdog. That good-natured creature turned her head my way but kept to her edge of the narrow sidewalk. She just checked quickly to see if I was something to herd, and she sniffed out a quick first impression about my life. When I paused, the dog’s owner apologized, in case his lovely dog had caused me any concern. That was thoughtful of him, and it reminded me later of the Golden Rule. “No problem at all,” I said, and we both went back to loading our vehicles. The next time we passed on the sidewalk, I noticed the words on his navy blue t-shirt, “Be nice,” in small smoothly curving letters. “I like the message,” I said. “I get a lot of comments about it,” he said. “It’s a tense time we’re living in,” I replied. “Back to basics, eh?” he said. This sounded like a question he hoped we already shared an answer to. I nodded in agreement. Soon we started up our vehicles, and half hour later my spouse and I, in our orange Honda, were crossing southern Illinois.

Heavy rain collapses part of ancient Michigan cave where ‘The Great Train Robbery’ was filmed
BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. (AP) — Part of an ancient Michigan cave where “The Great Train Robbery” was filmed has collapsed under heavy rain. MLive.com reports that a wall of Bear Cave in Buchanan collapsed this week. The wall collapsed at night. The cave was already closed to the public at the time of the collapse due to flooding. The campground that operates near the cave says the cave formed more than 25,000 years ago and served as a hiding place for slaves along the Underground Railroad and bandits who robbed an Ohio bank in 1895. That story led to filming part of the 1903 silent film “The Great Train Robbery” in the cave.
