ST. LOUIS – The National Weather Service has issued flash flooding warnings throughout the St. Louis region and parts of Illinois.

When heavy, intense rain falls on an area in a short amount of time, NWS may issue a flash flood warning to indicate of rising water imminent or occurring in an area.

This often prompts authorities to use the phrase “Turn Around. Don’t Drown.” Drivers should turn around and use an alternative route rather than risk driving through high waters with safety in mind.

Friday’s flash flood warning includes many counties in the St. Louis metro from Missouri and Illinois. These warnings are currently in effect until 3 p.m. CT.

NWS also issued some tornado warnings earlier on Tuesday in Franklin, Jefferson and Warren counties in Missouri. It appears tornado threats have weakened for now.

This is developing. Check back for details.
