    Bishop Eustace's Ian Petrutz selected by St. Louis in 2024 MLB Draft

    Ian Petrutz, a Mantua native and 2021 Bishop Eustace Prep graduate, was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 12th round (352nd overall pick) of the Major League Baseball Draft on Tuesday.

    Petrutz finished his junior season at the University of Alabama where he started in 57 games and batted .321 with 14 doubles and six homers. He played two seasons at Maryland, where he appeared in 92 games (84 starts) for the Terps.

    Petrutz was an All-South Jersey selection during his scholastic days at Bishop Eustace.

    As a senior, Petrutz helped power the Crusaders to a 21-1 record and No. 1 ranking in South Jersey. The team captured the Joe Hartmann Diamond Classic title and finished 19-0 against South Jersey opponents. He batted .449 with 31 hits, 12 walks and 15 stolen bases in 22 games.

    Petrutz is the seventh player from Bishop Eustace selected in the MLB Draft since 1996 when Blaine Neal was picked by the Florida Marlins in the fourth round, according to BaseballReference.com. The previous draftee was pitcher Tyler Phillips, a 16th-round selection by the Texas Rangers in 2015, won his first ML game for the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday.
