These two Missouri colleges were featured on list of most beautiful campuses in the US

College and university campuses are home to some of the most beautiful landscapes in the United States. From the campus building’s entry arches leading into its academic halls and manicured lawns between the dorms, everything on site works together to create each school’s distinctive atmosphere.

Architectural Digest, a monthly magazine that examines forms of architecture like interior design and landscaping, looked at thousands of campuses across the country, evaluating their features and building styles.

Using the information collected, the writers curated a list of the 64 most beautiful college campuses , including state schools and private institutions.

While no colleges from Kansas City or Kansas made the list, two in Missouri were featured.

“Many schools have beautiful elements—like immaculate dining halls, otherworldly dorms, or jaw-dropping libraries —but the schools on the following list stun across the board,” the magazine said in its story.

Alumni of Washington University in St. Louis and the University of Missouri in Columbia can be happy to know their campuses are among the most beautiful in the country, according to the list.

Why were Mizzou and Washington University featured?

The heart of Mizzou’s campus, a two-hour drive from Kansas City, is the Francis Quadrangle, featured in the magazine’s review. It’s home to the six columns that stand tall on campus, overlooking the lawn and Jesse Hall.

The columns are made out of local limestone and are the only remaining parts of the original Academic Hall after the building burned down in 1892.

As for Washington University, it was included for its campus design, created after it moved away from downtown St. Louis in 1905. The university hosted a design competition and went with firm Cope & Stewardson’s idea , which drew inspiration from architectural designs at Oxford and Cambridge universities in the United Kingdom.

Several of Wash U’s academic buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places .

Other notable colleges featured on the list include:

    • Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois
    • University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill
    • Columbia University in New York City
    • Stanford University in Stanford, California
    • University of Hawaii at Mānoa in Honolulu
