ST. LOUIS – A workplace dispute between two employees at a St. Louis chemical manufacturer led one of the employees to shoot and kill the other, police said.

According to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department’s probable cause statement, the shooting happened July 10 in the 4300 block of Geraldine Avenue, in the city’s Mark Twain/I-70 Industrial neighborhood.

Police said Kevin L. Jackson and another man exited the manufacturer that afternoon, got into an SUV, and drove off the parking lot. A short time later, Montrez Heart left the business with other employees and stood outside the perimeter fence on the eastern sidewalk of Geraldine.

A few minutes later, Jackson and the other individual returned in the SUV. Jackson’s cohort opened a passenger door and began shooting at Heart.

Heart suffered a gunshot wound to his head. Jackson backed the SUV toward Bircher and drove away. Jackson and the other man abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.

Heart died two days after the shooting. He was 24.

Police said they arrested Jackson, who confessed to the shooting and said there’d been a dispute between him and other employees earlier in the day. A company manager asked Jackson to leave.

The St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office charged Jackson with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. Jackson remains jailed without bond. He’s due in court on Wednesday, July 31, for a detention hearing.
