The St. Louis Cardinals were one of baseball's busiest teams at the trade deadline in 2024. They added Erick Fedde and Tommy Pham in a three-way trade with the Chicago White Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers.

They also traded for Tampa Bay Rays reliever Shawn Armstrong to bolster their bullpen.

To add Armstrong, St. Louis had to part ways with former top prospect Dylan Carlson. On Wednesday, Cardinals President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak discussed what went wrong for Carlson and why he needed a change of scenery.

"He had a very good spring, competed well, we had a lot of confidence that he could play on our club," Mozeliak said. "Unfortunately, he got injured in the second to last exhibition game in Arizona and never then caught his footing."

Perhaps a change of scenery will help Carlson. Mozeliak was also reminded of a comparison he made back in 2019 when he referred to Carlson as the "Albert Pujols or Oscar Taveras type."

Ultimately, that never panned out, and Carlson was ultimately traded to Tampa Bay. Injuries and other struggles hampered his development after he showed early promise in 2020 and 2021.

With the emergence of Michael Siani and Alec Burleson, as well as the arrival of Pham, Carlson was ultimately squeezed out of a spot in St. Louis and relegated to being their fifth outfielder. St. Louis needed to address their pitching staff and the way for them to do that was to find a new home for Carlson.
