The St. Louis Cardinals are slumping all of a sudden. After recovering from a 15-24 start and bouncing back into contention, the team has lost ground in the playoff race.

At 57-56, St. Louis is six games back in the National League Central and four back in the Wild Card race.

On Foul Territory, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch discussed the team's identity and whether or not they're capable of being a postseason team.

"Their identity is resilience, for sure," Goold said of the team. "It hasn't been the identity that they expected as far as leading them to wins. But it's been their identity, that veteran balance that they needed to get through more rocky times than they want."

Clearly, this is not what the Cardinals wanted. However, it is hard to pin the team as a World Series contender, especially when they're losing ground in the Wild Card race.

Goold noted that this is not what they expected and that they were hoping for more wins.

At the trade deadline, St. Louis added starter Erick Fedde and outfielder Tommy Pham in a three-way trade with the Chicago White Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers, but the moves haven't given them the boost they had hoped for, and certainly didn't make them a threat in the National League.

Time is running out for St. Louis. We'll see if they can turn things around or if they ultimately fall out of postseason contention.
