Both the St. Mary’s College of Maryland men’s and women’s lacrosse teams cruised to their respective United East Conference Tournament titles to earn berths in the NCAA Division III tournament this month.

On May 8, the men’s lacrosse team defeated Farmington State College 16-8 in the tournament opener, but three days later the Seahawks were upended by Rennsalear Polytechnic Institute 15-5 in the second round.

Meanwhile, the St. Mary’s College women’s lacrosse team opened its NCAA Division III tournament play with a dominant 16-1 victory over Grove City at Franklin & Marshall University in Lancaster, Pa. The Seahawks led 7-0 at halftime, yielded the first goal of the second half then posted nine unanswered to complete the lopsided victory last Saturday afternoon.

One day later, however, the Seahawks’ bid for a national title came to a halt when they were upended by host Franklin & Marshall 19-7 on Sunday afternoon. Junior Hailey Betch had two goals and Sanne Elling, Katelin Scala, Madison Laine, Ella Baynes and MC Mortimer each added a goal apiece. Franklin & Marshall led 5-0 until Elling notched the Seahawks’ first goal on Sunday.
