Downtown PKB focuses on removing weeds for monthly Downtown Cleanup

Obituary: Bauer, Ruth
Ruth Bauer, 97, of Marietta, died on Friday, July 19, 2024, at Waterview Pointe in Marietta. She was born on September 21, 1926, in Newport, Ohio, to the late Ernest Dana Valentine and Helen Stump Valentine, where she enjoyed a happy childhood being raised with her two sisters, Theresa Valentine Binegar and Bernadine (Bunny) Valentine Fox and brothers Robert and David Valentine. One of her fond childhood memories was accompanying her father, a First Mate, on the river barge, Sohio State, on trips to Paducah, KY. In her late teens, the family moved to Marietta, where Ruth worked in the retail clothing business before marrying and starting her family. On October 30, 1950, she married Theodore C Bauer and spent 73 years together. Always an entrepreneur at heart, Ruth and Ted lived on Front Street across from the Park and near the Washington Street bridge. When the bridge was under construction, Ruth opened a noon luncheonette by the bridge called “The Wooden Shoe” and served the workers hotdogs, hamburgers, and “the best milkshake in town.” When the bridge was complete, Ruth closed the shop, and she and Ted raised four children: Cynthia (Ted) Winning, of Parker, Colorado; Rebecca (Jerry) Mills, of Lakewood Ranch, Florida; Debora Miller, formerly of Kent, Ohio; Mark (Julie) Bauer, of Marietta.
Obituary: Kiggans, Doris Ann
Doris Ann Kiggans, 76, of Reno, OH, passed away from this earthly life into eternity on July 19, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Doris was born on Old Greens Run Road, St. Marys, WV on March 23, 1948 to the late Bernard L and Olive F. Dalrymple Lamp. She graduated from St Marys High School in 1966. Shortly after, on July 11, 1966, she married her husband, Charles M. Kiggans. She had previously worked for Frontier Local Schools as a bus driver. Doris was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and sweet friend to those around her. Most importantly, she was a Christian. Doris was baptized into Christ early in her life and, for the past several years, worshipped faithfully at the Wingett Run Church of Christ. Anyone who knew her knew that she always had a loving smile.

Barbara Marie Martin, 82, of New Matamoras, OH., passed away Friday, July 19, 2024, at her residence. She was born December 29, 1941, in New Matamoras to the late Merle and Beryl Ridgeway Cisler. Barbara enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and her animals. She is survived by her children Ronald, Loyde and Dereck Stalnaker, Chandra Davis (Ray) and Serena Stalnaker Saunders, grandchildren, Joshua ( LeighAnn) and Jason Stalnaker, Jerry (Sheryl) Jones, Yolanda (Brian) Knapp and Heather and Kyle Ogaz, great-grandchildren, Josiah, Emma and Gunner Jones, Chyanne and Blake Knapp and Cody and Justice Ramsey Jones, brother Richard Cisler, sister Janet Schwaben, sister-in-laws Joyce and Glena Cisler and her caregiver Delecia Davis. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband William Martin, grandson Justin Jones, brothers Bob and Harry Cisler, and sister Sarah Taylor. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Wednesday, July 24, 2024, at Hadley Funeral Home, 700 Main St., New Matamoras, with Jarod Kiggins officiating, burial to follow in Matamoras Cemetery. MARIETTA — The Fenton Art Glass Collectors Association will be having its annual convention today through Thursday at the Marietta Shrine Club. FROM THE ARCHIVES: History of Harrisville High School
In the year 1872, the Independent Sub-District of Harrisville was created by Act of the West Virginia Legislature and the school was reorganized. Besides usual elementary subjects, courses in Higher Mathematics and Latin were offered. From time to time numerous other subjects were added and by 1900 a two-year high school was in active operation, turning out a class of five or six students each year.
