Janet Ann (Schmett) Chanley, age 79, of Huntingburg
Janet Ann (Schmett) Chanley, age 79, of Huntingburg, died at 2:49 p.m., Friday, July 5, 2024, at Heritage Pointe in Huntington, Indiana. She was born November 11, 1944, in Huntingburg, Indiana, to Albert and Sarah (Maxey) Schmett of Huntingburg. She married Elwayne Chanley on August 29, 1964, at Salem United Church of Christ in Huntingburg. Janet and her husband Elwayne, and brother Mike Schmett formed Schmett Farms, Inc. of which she was the secretary for many years. Janet also served as church secretary for Salem United Church of Christ for several years and later was a relay for life coordinator for Southwestern Indiana for the American Cancer Society.
Norb Krapf to Read from His New Book July 20 at museum.
On Saturday, July 20,2024 Jasper native and Indiana poet, Norbert Krapf, will visit to read from his new book called “Ida Hagan of the Pinkston Freedom Settlement” at 1:30pm at the Dubois County Museum at 2704 N. Newton Street in Jasper. He is excited to share his poems on the life of this remarkable woman. Miss Hagan grew up in the Pinkston Freedom Settlement that was located in the present Huntingburg Conservation Club area in Dubois County, IN. Miss Hagan achieved much in her growing up years in Ferdinand and Krapf is excited to share his 14 year research into her life. Krapf will have copies of his book on hand and will be available to sign his book. The Museum’s Gift Shop also has several more books written by Mr. Krapf on hand for purchase.

Dorothy A. Strobel, age 85, of Dale
Dorothy A. Strobel, age 85, of Dale, passed away on Saturday, July 6, 2024, in Dale, Indiana. She was born January 21, 1939, in New Boston to Hubert and Elsie (Friedel) Brinksneader; and married James A Strobel on June 24, 1961 at St. John Chrysostom Catholic Church in New Boston. She was a member of St. Francis of Assisi/St. Joseph Catholic Church in Dale.
James Paul Northrup, age 62, of Dale
James Paul Northrup, age 62, of Dale, passed away at 1:37 p.m., Saturday, July 6, 2024, at his residence. He was born June 10, 1962, to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Robert Henry Northrup and Fern (Hoffman) McDermott; and married Lisa Engelbrecht on July 26, 1987, in Lincoln City. James enjoyed listening to music and helping family and friends.
Attempted Murder Arrest
A late night dispute between neighbors has resulted in the arrest of Tyler Richardson, 32, of St. Croix, for Attempted Murder and several other felony offenses. On Sunday, July 7, at approximately 11:50 p.m., area police responded to a residence located at 12095 SR 62, St. Croix, after a verbal argument between neighbors about a barking dog ended with gunfire and a family member being seriously injured. Preliminary investigation by Indiana State Police revealed Richardson confronted his neighbors about their barking dog. At one point during the confrontation, James Morris, 32, of Tell City, walked toward the property line and was allegedly shot by Richardson with a handgun. Morris was unarmed and was visiting his in-laws, which has the property next to Richardson. Three other adults and two children were nearby when the shooting occurred. Morris was transported to Harrison County Hospital by family members before being airlifted to University of Louisville Hospital where he is currently being treated for gunshot wounds. Richardson is currently in the Perry County Jail.
