John Alan Bunch
John Alan Bunch, of Eddyville, Ky., passed away on July 5, 2024, in Paducah, Ky., at the age of 53. Born on Sept. 30, 1970, in Evansville, Ind., and raised in Boonville, Ind. John was a loving husband to his wife, Ladonna Bunch, with whom he shared a beautiful life in Eddyville. He was the father of Rachel Gurren of Owensboro, Ky., who is married to Alex Gurren, and the grandfather of Ethan, Isaac, and McKenzie. His parents, David and Kathy Bunch, reside in Henderson, Ky., and his brother Jason Bunch, along with his wife Amy and his niece Emma and nephews Lucas, Wesley, Samuel, and Micah continue to live in Henderson as well.
Season in review: Cannelton baseball
CANNELTON— Cannelton baseball this season played in 11 total games and the Bulldogs were not able to come up with a win. Their first three games of the year put them up against West Washington, Columbus Christian and Rock Creek. Gage Garrett against West Washington (17-0) finished with the team’s lone hit in the contest. Cannelton against Columbus Christian (21-7) combined for three hits with Garrett, Trevor Hale, and Jayden Cecil each recording a hit. Furthermore, the Bulldogs drew eight walks in the game. Lastly, against Rock Creek, the Bulldogs lost 19-6 and the team combined for two hits. Hale and Cecil recorded one each. Furthermore, the team drew 11 walks.
Anthony Jerome Cecil
Anthony Jerome Cecil, 75, of Hawesville passed away on July 9, 2024, at his home. He was born in Owensboro on March 15, 1949, to John William and Willie Mae Cecil. Anthony was a Vietnam veteran who enjoyed learning, gardening, fishing, and long talks with anyone who would sit and listen. He was always out and about, keeping himself busy.
Treatment facility breaks ground in Huntingburg
HUNTINGBURG — Community leaders gathered at the groundbreaking for the new Huntingburg wastewater treatment facility Tuesday, July 16, first at city hall, then at the current treatment facility site. “We appreciate you all coming here today,” said Mayor Neil Elkins standing before the crowd at city hall.

TELL CITY — Allen R. Gentry aka “Big Al”, 59, of Tell City, passed away at home with family and friends by his side on Sunday, July 14, 2024. Al was born on January 6, 1965, in Louisville, KY to the late Charles “PeeWee” and Anna (Anders) Gentry.

TELL CITY — Sarah L. Wheatley, 61, of Tell City, passed away on Thursday, July 11, 2024, at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital after fighting a courageous battle with aHUS. She was born in Tell City on September 25, 1962, the daughter of the late Casper “John” and Glenda (Sprinkle) Etienne.

HUNTINGBURG — Destination Huntingburg held a “Kids Day at the Market” Saturday, July 13, starting early morning and going until noon. Kids Day is a day for children to set up booths and vend their wares to customers.
Comedian Kevin Farley set to bring the laughs to The Astra on Saturday, Aug. 17th
JASPER — The Astra Theatre will be welcoming Kevin Farley for a comedic performance on Saturday, Aug. 17. Farley has truly established himself as comedic presence both on the big screen and off. Multi-tasking as a comedian, actor, writer, seems easy for Farley because he does it all, with a fabulous sense of humor.
Wesley Leibering
Wesley Leibering, of Huntingburg, passed away on Monday, July 15, 2024, at Memorial Hospital and Healthcare Center in Jasper. He was born Oct. 7, 1930, in Huntingburg to Walter and Geneva (Kemp) Leibering. Wes was a proud Happy Hunter graduate of 1949. He met a sweet girl named Madonna at the Labor Day Picnic in Huntingburg and asked her on a date to go to a Paoli football game. She was freezing in her thin coat but Wesley warmed her heart and they were married on November 26, 1955. He was a veteran of the United States Navy and when he returned from duty, worked for Kimball at Jasper Laminates division for 39+ years. His co-workers called him Red Dog. He loved everything sports. He and Madonna loved watching Southridge Basketball and it was a big thrill for them to watch them in the state final games. Wes was a volunteer for the Southridge Raider Football team working the chain gang for 21 years from 1999 — 2020 until the age of 91. He also was an avid fan of the New York Yankees, Purdue sports, I.U. sports and the Colts.
Otwell Festival still a success despite weather setbacks
The Otwell 4th of July Festival kicked off with a community wide church service and free lunch on Sunday, June 30, with about 60 people in attendance. Crews spent the next few days setting up and preparing the grounds. On Wednesday, July 3, the area received about three and a half inches of rain in roughly ninety minutes, which would cause postponements and cancellations, but the Little Miss, Junior Miss, and Miss Firecracker contests continued as planned that evening.

TELL CITY — The Tell City Kiwanis Club “Walk of Honor” flag project is being hosted again this fall. Subscriptions are being taken now and flags are limited. Although the deadline to subscribe is August 16, 2024, once all flag subscriptions are purchased there will be no more available so please order as soon as possible.

Hazel Cash
TELL CITY — Hazel A. Cash, 88, passed away on Sunday, July 14, 2024, surrounded by her family. She was born in Troy on May 1, 1936, daughter of Claude and Claire (Thrasher) VanHoosier. Hazel worked in assembly at Commercial Filters until her retirement in 1998. She worked there for over twenty-two years.
