Randalia no longer a city, officially unincorporates
RANDALIA, Iowa (KCRG) - Randalia, only of the smallest cities in Eastern Iowa with a population of around 50 people, is no longer considered a city at all. The Fayette County Baord of Supervisors said it was always up to the few residents of Randalia to run the whole city. They had to serve on the city council, maintain the roads and streets, and build their own wastewater treatment plant. Finding people and the money to do those jobs was part of why the city decided to unincorporate. Randalia was officially unincorporated on June 30.

Volga Navy Takes Win over West Central Gold 14U
West Central Gold 14U hit the road to Volga on Tuesday, July 9th. Volga Navy picked up the win by a score of 20-7. West Central scored one run in the top of the first, but Volga scored four runs in the bottom of the inning for a 4-1 lead. Volga added another run in the bottom of the second. West Central tied the game, 5-5, with four runs in the top of the third. Volga, however, scored nine times to go ahead 14-5. West Central had a run in the top of the fourth, but Volga had a six-run fourth inning for a 20-6 lead. The final run for West Central came in the top of the fifth before the game ended on the 10-run rule.

Mary E. Zittergruen
Mary Esther Zittergruen, of Monona, went peacefully to her forever home surrounded by her family on Saturday, June 29, 2024. She was 67 years old. She was born Aug. 31, 1956, in Guttenberg, to Allen and Esther (Brase) Werges. Mary’s faith was nourished at Saint Peter Lutheran Church in Garnavillo where she was baptized on Sept. 16, 1956 and confirmed on May 24, 1970. Mary graduated from Garnavillo Community School in 1974.
Nicole McGeough
Nicole M. McGeough, of Prescott Valley, Ariz., age 28, formerly of Waukon, passed away suddenly Tuesday, June 25, 2024, at her home in Arizona. A prayer service will be held Saturday, July 20, at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon, with Fr. John Moser officiating. Burial will be at St. Pius Cherry Mound Cemetery in rural Harpers Ferry, at a later date. Friends may greet the family from 9 a.m.until time of services at the church on Saturday. Martin-Grau Funeral Home in Waukon is handling the arrangements.
Rosanna Mayer
Rosanna “Rosie” Mayer, aged 95, of Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, passed away on July 4, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Born on Sept. 4, 1928, in Waukon, Iowa, she was the daughter of Patrick and Mary (Collins) Gallagher. Rosie graduated from St. Patrick’s High School in Waukon, Iowa, in 1947. In 1950, she joined the United States Air Force, serving as a nurse in hospitals at Offutt Air Force Base (NE), Great Falls (MT), and Travis Air Force Base (CA). In 1957, she transitioned to become a flight attendant, proudly serving until 1961 at the rank of Staff Sergeant. Rosie married Msgt Bernard F. Mayer, USAF/Ret, on Dec. 30, 1961, at Sandia Base in Albuquerque, New Mex. She worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) at Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital for several years. Rosie was a remarkable wife and mother. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Bernard, Rosie is also survived by her children: TSgt Robert J. Mayer, USAF/Ret; Anton B. Mayer; Mary M. (Mayer) Dixon; and Catherine A. (Mayer) Breitsprecher (CW3 Scott J. Breitsprecher, USA Ret). Her grandchildren include James Mayer, Juliet Mayer, Nicolas Fiskaali, Tony Mayer, Curtis Dixon, Ellie Dixon, Catrina Mayer-Lynch (Patrick Lynch), and Gabrielle Breitsprecher. Daughter-in-laws Spring Mayer, Kim Papenfuss-Anderegg, Daisy (Chavez-Medina) Mayer and son-in-law David Dixon were also part of her cherished family. Rosie was preceded in death by her son, Earl L. Mayer, and daughter, Rose Marie Mayer. She had three siblings: brothers Patrick (Roberta) Gallagher and Francis (Eunice) Gallagher, and sister Madonna (Carl) Lodico.
Anna Mae Lessard
Anna Mae Lessard, age 86 formerly of Prairie du Chien passed away Thursday, July 4, 2024, at home. She was born on March 18, 1938, to Elroy and Anola (Thomas) Berberich. Anna Mae married Kenneth “Pork” Lessard on August 24, 1957, at the United Methodist Church in Prairie du Chien and together, they raised 2 children. She worked as a cook for Campion Jesuit High School and the Convalescent Center, both in Prairie du Chien. She later worked locally as a caregiver for Lori Knapp for many years until retirement. She enjoyed gardening, stamping, making cards, and socializing with friends. She especially loved spending time with her family and grandchildren who call her OG. She also loved her grand-pets Snoopy and Gabby. She is survived by her daughter Kelly (Randy) Lindner; one brother Harold (Shirley) Berberich; sister-in-law Beverly Gagnon; 6 grandchildren Inanda (Austin), Anola, and Elijah Lessard, and Michael (Jeri Lynn), Mitchel, and Serena (Bryan) Lindner; seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Anna Mae’s husband Kenneth preceded her in death on Dec. 24, 2006; also preceding her in death is their son Jeffrey Lessard. She was preceded by in death by her parents and siblings Wilma (Monroe) Gardner, Ruth (Jerry) Heike, and Royce Berberich.
Barbara B. Matejka
Barbara B. Matejka, age 86 of Prairie du Chien passed away on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, at Edenbrook in Platteville. She was born on August 4, 1937, the daughter of Elmer and Marjorie (Biggar) Van Horn. Barb married Robert “Bob” Matejka on Aug. 25, 1956. She studied at Richland County Teachers College before attending the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse where she obtained her master’s degree in education. Barb and her husband later moved to Prairie du Chien where she served as an educator for 26 years until retirement. She enjoyed playing slots at “the boat” in Marquette, Iowa, and socializing with friends at The Barn Restaurant in Prairie du Chien. Barb loved the Christmas season and spent most of the year buying gifts for those she loved. She especially cherished the time she was able to spend with her grandchildren.
