Joanne Groth, 89, passed away peacefully Monday, March 25, 2024 at Woodlands Creek Senior Living Center in Clive, Iowa. Joanne June Grotegut was born June 27, 1934 in Ludlow Township, in rural Waukon, IA. Upon graduating from Waukon High School in 1952, Joanne moved to Cedar Rapids and worked as a secretary at Collins Radio. She returned to Ludlow and married Carlton Martins on August 16, 1953. They made their home on Carlton’s family farm until his death in November 1965, at which time she and their four children moved to Postville. Joanne worked as a legal secretary before becoming the head secretary at Cora B. Darling Elementary School, where she worked for many years. She was very proud of her work and liked to say, “The school doesn’t run without me!” Joanne had many career highlights during her tenure at Darling Elementary – one of which was leading unionization efforts for the Postville School District’s administrative and support staff.

Zachary student makes Upper Iowa University honors list
Upper Iowa University announced Aujahnae Coady, of Zachary, made the dean's list for the Spring 2024 semester. To be honored, the undergraduate must have earned a minimum 3.50 GPA and be enrolled as a full-time student. Coady is a psychology major.

Clermont farmers Rick and Damien Matt will demonstrate a fifth soil health principle, “integrating livestock,” in practice on their farm on Aug. 22, after having participated in a study, Iowa State Extension Fayette County announced.
Strawberry Point council members share concerns
STRAWBERRY POINT — As the Strawberry Point City Council considered whether to reappoint their fire chief for a three-month probationary period with nondisclosure requirements at a meeting July 17, a motion that failed on a 1-4 vote to reappoint, council members shared their reasoning for voting not to reappoint.

MONONA — Mary Esther Zittergruen, 67, of Monona went peacefully to her forever home surrounded by her family on Saturday, June 29, 2024. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday July 2 at Leonard-Grau Funeral Home in Monona. There will also be a one-hour visitation before the service at the church on Wednesday. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 3 at Faith Lutheran Church in Monona with the reverend Mel Harris officiating. Burial will follow at National Cemetery in National.
Stanley Ice Cream Social
STANLEY – The Stanley Fire Department and EMS will be hosting their annual ice cream social from 4:30 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, August 4. They will be serving a choice of ribeye sandwich, brat patty, hamburger, or hotdog meals with a bag of chips, drink, homemade pie, and a cup of homemade ice cream. FAYETTE — Michael Morris may be new to Fayette, but he says the pride he takes in getting the job done right and fairly supersedes everything. The city of Fayette Police Department recently appointed Morris, a Western Tennessee native, as the new chief of police at the council meeting on Monday, July 15. Morris was sworn in that Wednesday by Fayette Mayor Nathan Post. Now, he is hoping to rebuild the department starting from the ground up as they transition into the next fleet of dedicated officers.
