Paul J. Skrypek, 85, of Calmar, Iowa, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of July 5, 2024 in Williamsport. Born June 24, 1939 in Wilkes-Barre, he was the son of Paul L. Costly mowing service spurs Maynard to go diesel
MAYNARD — The Monday evening meeting of the Maynard City Council made short work of its agenda items and receipt of reports from the mayor, superintendent, and city clerk. The item which took most of the council members' attention was a switch on what type of new mower City Superintendent Dan Howard would be authorized to purchased. In June the council had approved the purchase of a gasoline powered mower. At that time the understanding was that the new machine would be delivered within a couple of weeks. The dealer where the purchase was made informed Howard that there would be a delay in obtaining the mower. Howard informed the council Monday evening that the machine was not going to be available for pick up until sometime in August.

Monona PD defends decision not to release names of those charged in sex abuse cases
The Monona Police Department is drawing public criticism for choosing not to release the identities of individuals charged in months-long sexual abuse investigations. In a July 10 press release, the department said it began investigating multiple sexual assault allegations in November 2023, which later produced other instances of sexual exploitation of minors and pornographic material to/from a minor.

Virgene Mathilde Anna Groth, 100, of rural Elkport, passed away peacefully at MercyOne Hospital in Elkader on July 10, 2024. Virgene was born on Oct. 31, 1923, to Rosetta (Sadewasser) and Alfred Wittman on their farm near Garber, delivered by her grandmother Marie Sadewasser. She was so tiny that her grandmother didn’t think she would live. Her first bed was a shoe box placed in the open wood oven to keep her warm. As Virgene noted, she outlived them all.

Robert (“Bob, Papa, Stuey”) Sturch, 74, of Harpers Ferry, Iowa, formerly of Waterloo, Iowa, passed away Saturday, June 29, 2024, at his home in Harpers Ferry. A military honors service will be held Saturday, Aug. 3, at 1 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park in Harpers Ferry with a luncheon to follow at the Legion Hall. Martin-Grau Funeral Home in Waukon, Iowa, is assisting the family.

The Waukon City Council met in regular session Monday, July 15 to address a full agenda of matters. The meeting was called to order by Mayor Arvid Hatlan. During Public Comment, Ian Zahren, an Independent candidate running for the Iowa House of Representatives District 64, discussed being an advocate for small communities like Waukon. Zahren requested feedback from the council for follow-up in Des Moines with council member Steve Wiedner discussing the need for stronger enforcement relating to illegal drugs. Assistant City Attorney Hattie Frana discussed the need for more resources beyond court-ordered mental health related treatment. Zahren noted the approximate 3.5 million dollar statewide opioid settlement with options available to apply for that funding as a city and as a county.
