Anna Mae Meyer
Anna Mae Meyer, 90, of Garnavillo, passed away Thursday, June 27, 2024, at the Elkader Care Center. Visitation will be held from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 6, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Garnavillo. Funeral services will commence at 10:30 a.m. with burial to follow in Garnavillo City Cemetery, conducted by Pastor David Lenth.

CLASS OF 2024 SPOTLIGHT: Kirby to study med lab technology
Starmont graduate Madelyn Kirby, daughter of Annette Kirby of Strawberry Point, will attend Hawkeye Community College to major in medical laboratory technology. Involved in volleyball, track, National Honor Society, DECA, FFA, Woodberry Clovers 4-H Club, St. Mary’s Church, and Faith Formation, she will miss being a part of the Starmont track and field squad.
Maynard celebs, royalty celebrated at opening ceremonies
Both Maynard Citizen of the Year and the Grand Marshals were announced and celebrated during the opening ceremonies on Saturday, June 29, during the Maynard Days celebration. Selected for Citizen of the Year was Sheryl Sherman. Sheryl has retired this past year after working for 42 years in the banking industry with 38 years with the Maynard Savings Bank. She and her husband, Randy, have two children, Kelli Kleppe of Maynard and Kara Sherman of Strawberry Point.
Flood waters encroach on Prairie throughout weekend
The Mississippi River has continued to rise at a steady rate, consistent with predictions made by the National Weather Service. As of Monday, July 1, the river measured 19.99 feet in McGregor, Iowa, the closest check point to Prairie du Chien. Predictions anticipated the river would peak at approximately 20.3 feet by Tuesday, July 2.

Marquette handles Mississippi River flooding
MARQUETTE, Iowa (KCRG) - The Mississippi River in Marquette has hit the moderate flood stage and it’s expected to rise another foot before it crests early next week. The City of Marquette shuts its floodgates and uses water pumps once the Mississippi River reaches 19 feet high. On Saturday the river was over that height. The highest the river has ever been at McGregor and Marquette was a little over 25 feet.
David Arnold Pleggenkuhle
David Arnold Pleggenkuhle, 87, died June 26th , 2024 peacefully in Hawkeye, Iowa. David was the son of Arnold and Elma (West) Pleggenkuhle and a life-long resident of Hawkeye. He graduated from Hawkeye High School in 1955, from Upper Iowa University in 1959, and served in the United States Army from 1960 to 1962. He was part of his family’s business, Hawkeye Hatchery, from 1952 to 1997. The business over the years included trucking, custom harvesting, an egg route, hatching and selling Dekalb baby chicks and Dekalb seed corn, and a small farming endeavor. The hatchery part of the business closed in 1997 after 45 years but David continued farming until his death.
