NICC Trustees fire president for second time
For a second time, the Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) Board of Trustees has voted to fire president Herbert Riedel following an appeal ruling Thursday. An independent administrative law judge presided over a private hearing (March 25-27) regarding proposed termination of Dr. Riedel’s employment contract with NICC. On May 20, the judge handed down a decision and determined the Board of Trustees was justified in terminating Riedel’s contract. Riedel appealed the decision.

ELKADER, Iowa — The last full weekend in July, the city of Elkader will once again be the venue for a long weekend of activities and live music at Sweet Corn Days. This year, it will begin Thursday, July 25 and run into Saturday, July 27. Events include a donut hole eating contest, a carnival and a "Bend and Sip" yoga class.
Trustees fire NICC president again after appeal ruling
The Northeast Iowa Community College Board of Trustees has voted for a second time to fire president Herbert Riedel after an appeal ruling. And independent administrative law judge determined the Board of Trustees was justified in terminating Reidel’s contract, an action the board took in March. Riedel appealed the decision, and after Thursday’s hearing, the Trustees voted unanimously to terminate his contract. Reidel was placed on administrative leave in October of last year. In a letter to the editor of the Driftless Journal, Riedel claimed he was put on leave as retaliation for complaints he made about Trustee Chair Jim Anderson.

Earl W. Crary, 66, of Garnavillo, IA passed away Monday, June 24, 2024, at his home surrounded by his loving family after a 10-year battle with cancer. In March, an independent administrative law judge determined the Board of Trustees was justified in terminating Reidel’s contract. Riedel appealed the decision, and after a review hearing Thursday rejected that appeal, the Trustees voted unanimously to terminate his contract.

The Huskies went extra innings Thursday in Calmar, but fell, 5-4, to South Winneshiek on a walkoff in the bottom of the ninth.
