DES MOINES, Iowa — The world's longest, oldest, and largest recreational bicycle ride is back for its 51st trek across the state of Iowa. This year's version of RAGBRAI — the Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa — departs from Glenwood on Sunday, July 21, and ends 434 miles later in Burlington on Saturday, July 27. In between, there will be overnight stops at Red Oak, Atlantic, Winterset, Knoxville, Ottumwa and Mount Pleasant, with plenty to eat, drink, do and see along the way.
Nine area athletes named SEISC first-team
LEE COUNTY - Five Central Lee softball players and three baseball players were SEI Superconference South Division first-team selections. Shanna Buford was a co-player of the year in softball, along with West Burlington-Notre Dame’s Logan Kelley. LEE COUNTY – Lee County has once again attracted federal funds for improvements to health care and economic vitality. Last week the Southeast Iowa Regional and Economic Port Authority was informed by Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks’ staff that the group has been initially approved for a $2 million appropriation from Congress to further develop the property at Lee County Economic Development Group’s office in Montrose.

Leo Wayne Scott, 91, of Burlington, formerly of Sperry, died Monday, July 15, 2024, at his home at Addington Place of Burlington. Born Feb. 9, 1933, in Sperry, he was the son of Edmund and Josephine Hilda Scott. He married Ruby Sutcliffe on Feb. 12, 1953. She died Oct. 27, 2020.

Judith Rae Johnson, 64, of Burlington, died Wednesday, July 17, 2024, at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington. Born Aug. 17, 1959, she was the daughter of Robert Kenneth and Betty Jean Becker McGill. She graduated from Mediapolis High School. She married Jeff Johnson in Gladstone, Ill. They later divorced.
