Franklin complex hopes to become a hub for athletic development
What began as an idea is expected to measure 15,000 square feet by the time January arrives. The Training Ground, opened in Franklin last November by Trevor Perry, is tailored to help achieve the potential of young athletes in any one of four different sports — soccer, basketball, volleyball and lacrosse.

GREENFIELD – Seven-year-old Max Ledbetter slipped his arms through the straps of a forest green backpack and hugged it to his chest. The red-haired, freckled-faced boy was happy to be among the hundreds of kids who received a new backpack packed with school supplies at the Hancock County Community Night on Wednesday night at the Hancock County Fairgrounds.
Spartanettes superior at NDA camp
The Connersville Spartanette Dance Team came away with Excellent ratings for their Home and Team Lead Routines at the 2024 National Dance Alliance team camp at Ball State University in Muncie last week. The Spartanettes earned a gold plaque for a Superior Team Routine, the Heart-Of-Gold Certificate, the St. Jude’s Spirit Stick (awarded to one team in recognition of their support for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital), five Spirit Ribbons, and one Showmanship Ribbon as a team.

Charles L. Wood
Charles L. Wood, 87 of Franklin and formerly of Brooksville, Florida, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 16, 2024 with his four daughters by his side. He was born on August 14, 1936 in Sonora, Kentucky to Paul L. and Maggie L. (Coomer) Wood. He married Patricia (Azzarella) Wood. She survives. He is also survived by his four daughters, Deborah Beck (Lynn), Pam Prosser (Brent), Leslie Wood and Cheryl Moran (Kevin); ten grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren and brother, Robert Wood (Sue); and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in passing by his parents; brothers, George Wood, Larry Wood and Carl Wood; and his first wife, Ann (Sanders) Wood.
Bartholomew County Sheriff deputies, Edinburgh police investigating fatal accident on North U.S. 31
At approximately 12:11 p.m. Thursday, deputies responded to an accident with injury near the intersection of North U.S. 31 and County Road West 800 North. Dispatch advised deputies that there was a male with significant injuries on the scene as a result of being struck by a vehicle. Preliminary investigation indicates that the victim had stopped to assist another motorist with their disabled vehicle.
Local church to celebrate 200 year-anniversary
Fayette County is now over 200 years old. Most of it was sliced from Franklin County in 1819. Included in the list of churches that are still functioning after 200 years, is the Village Creek Primitive Baptist Church, located about one mile southeast of Connersville, nestled behind Village Creek Estates, at 1090 S Co Rd 150 E. It was organized July 24, 1824 at the home of Robert Gilky.

ANGOLA — The Trine University cross country programs released their 2024 fall schedules earlier this month. The Thunder teams will open in the Franklin Grizzly Invitational on Sept. 7 at Blue River Memorial Park in Shelbyville. That park will host the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional on Nov. 16.

Traffic stop Thursday in North Vernon leads to DUI, gun charges
A traffic stop on Thursday evening in North Vernon led to the arrest of a motorist on weapon and other charges, police report. The stop that led to the arrest of 54-year-old Andy L. Edgar of North Vernon started at about 8:15 p.m. when North Vernon Officer Nathan Vogel stopped a white Chrysler 300 for speeding in the 800 block of South State Street, according to a news release from Sgt. Isaac Barkes.
Alabama man sentenced after setting father's home on fire, killing family pets
Federal authorities say an Alabama man will spend nearly five years in prison after he was found guilty of setting his father's home on fire and killing multiple pets. Tommy Harrison Sr., 34, was sentenced to 57 months in prison and two years of supervised release after pleading guilty to crossing state lines to commit arson.
