Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity will begin site work this week and start building homes later this month at The Heights, a major redevelopment of the former Hillcrest Golf Course in St. Paul.

The Twin Cities Habitat project will create nearly 150 “affordable homeownership opportunities” on four city blocks, according to a press release. The first phase will include the construction of 74 units on two blocks. Thirty-five will be home to the Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project this fall.

The 112-acre redevelopment site is at the southwest corner of Larpenteur Avenue and McKnight Road.

“We are thrilled to start construction at The Heights and lay the groundwork for the first 74 units of affordable homeownership at the site,” Chris Coleman, president & CEO of Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity and former St. Paul mayor, said in a statement. “Thanks to public and private support, Habitat for Humanity homes are affordable to working-class families, help unlock generational wealth building, and create a more vibrant, equitable community.”

The St. Paul Port Authority is leading the broader, $750 million redevelopment effort at The Heights. The project will address “critical housing needs” with an emphasis on environmental sustainability, according to the release.

Designed to be an all-electric community seeking LEED-Platinum Certification, the development will include 25 acres of parks and greenspaces, neighborhood gathering spaces, public art, bike and walking trails, and 1,000 living-wage light industrial jobs.

Besides Twin Cities Habitat’s 147 homeownership units, Sherman Associates and JO Companies will develop nearly 900 affordable rental units.
