A 17-year-old suspect is in custody in St. Paul following a homicide on the city's eastside late Monday night. Police are investigating that city's latest homicide.

It happened around 10:30 p.m. Monday on the Greater East Side near the intersection of Van Dyke Street and York Avenue, southeast of Lake Phalen, near Hazel Park playground.

Police responded to reports of shots fired and a vehicle that had crashed into a tree.

"Officers found an adult male victim in the driver's seat suffering from what they believed is a gunshot injury," said St. Paul police sergeant Mike Ernster.

The man died at the scene despite life-saving efforts by first responders.

This is the 12th reported homicide of the year in St. Paul. At this time a year ago, that number was 17.

Anyone with information about this incident can contact St. Paul police at 651-266-5650.
