The bridge connecting downtown St. Paul to the city’s East Side will close for three years as it undergoes a $91 million renovation.

Starting on July 29, the Kellogg-3rd Street Bridge, which connects Broadway Street and Mounds Boulevard, will close until 2027.

The new bridge will have four lanes of traffic and a barrier-separated trail on both sides of the road for bicycles and pedestrians. It will feature artist-designed ornamental railings and piers, according to an announcement from the City of St. Paul.

The intersections near Union Depot and at Mounds Boulevard will also be reconstructed to improve accessibility.

The project will be funded by state bonding, federal grants and local funding.

During the renovation, traffic will be detoured to East 7th Street.

“After nearly a decade, we are excited to get this bridge project underway thanks to the financial support from our local, state, and federal leaders,” said St. Paul Public Works Director Sean Kershaw in a statement.

“The new bridge is critical to our regional transportation network. It provides a more reliable connection to St. Paul that improves safety and access for people walking, biking, taking transit, or driving.”
