Area college students earn degrees, academic honors
Reid Beilby of Grand Island has been named to the Dean’s List for the spring semester at Manchester University in North Manchester, Indiana. Beilby is studying Nutrigenomics. Undergraduate students earning a semester grade point average of 3.5 or higher who have completed at least 12 semester hours with no more than three hours of Pass/Not Pass grades are included on the Dean’s List.
George Clayton Ferris, 95, Grand Island
George Clayton Ferris passed away from this life in Grand Island, on Thursday, June 27, 2024, at the age of 95. George was born on December 25, 1928, on a farm near Wausa, to Harry and Mary (Ernest) Ferris. He attended a country school near the family farm until after the eighth grade when he attended Hartington High School while living with his grandparents John and Susie Ernest. He would eventually graduate from high school in Hartington.

Grand Island man accused of driving 151 mph in 50 mph zone while drunk
GRAND ISLAND – A Grand Island man is accused of driving 151 mph in a 50 mph zone while intoxicated. Jason W. Hornady, 54, of 2711 Riverside Drive was charged in Hall County Court with first-offense DUI, 2nd offense willful reckless driving, racing on a highway, all misdemeanors; and speeding more than 36 mph over the limit, an infraction.
Central Nebraska Man Sentenced for Fraudulently Obtaining Farm Loans and Bankruptcy Fraud
United States Attorney Susan Lehr announced that Daniel Butt, 39, of Grand Island, Nebraska, was sentenced on July 3, 2024 in federal court in Lincoln, Nebraska for making a false statement on a loan application and bankruptcy fraud. Senior United States District Judge John M. Gerrard sentenced Butt to five years of probation. Butt will also have to serve eight weekends in jail. Butt has also been ordered to pay $192,758.61 in restitution to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Farm Service Agency.
