Nebraska native still remembered in Belgium after World War II emergency landing
GRAND ISLAND, Neb. — On Oct. 17, 1944, a B-17 bomber piloted by Grand Island native Perry E. Powell made an emergency landing in a field near the town of Wichelen, Belgium. Before the landing, seven members of the nine-member crew parachuted to safety. All nine of the men were warmly welcomed by the citizens of Wichelen.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. // Navy water polo player Caden Capobianco (Sr / Laguna Beach, Calif.), women's lacrosse player Tori DiCarlo (Jr / Rosemont, Pa.), wrestler Grady Griess (Sr / Grand Island, Neb.), rifle athlete Clarissa Layland (Sr / Granbury, Texas), women's golfer Stephanie Lee (Sr / Southlake, Texas), men's lacrosse player Jackson Peters (Sr / Darien, Conn.), gymnast Matthew Petros (So / Broadview Heights, Ohio), women's rower Tenlea Radack (Jr / Washington, D.C.), women's rowing coxswain Maeve Swick (Sr / Annapolis, Md.) and men's golfer Benjamin Valdez (Jr / Stevenson Ranch, Calif.) earned Academic All-District accolades for at-large sports from the College Sports Communicators (CSC) this week. Nine of the 10 will advance to the national ballot that will determine CSC's Academic All-America Teams, which will be announced July 16 (women) and 17 (men).
Grand Island man accused of speeding at 151 mph while intoxicated
GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - A Grand Island man whose car was clocked at 151 mph is charged with drunk driving and reckless driving. Court records show 54-year-old Jason Hornady is charged with first offense driving under the influence, second offense reckless driving, racing on a highway and speeding. A court hearing is scheduled July 10.
