The St. Peter softball team wrapped up a four-game home stand Thursday and Friday night with nonconference games against the Tri-City United Titans and the Stewartville Tigers. The Saints defense was solid both nights, allowing a single run over the two-game stretch, defeating TCU 5-1 before earning a 1-0 shutout victory over the two-loss Tigers.

With the wins, St. Peter is now 10-7 (6-2 BSB) on the season with just three games remaining on the regular season schedule, all of them on the road.

Thursday’s game against the Titans saw the visiting team score first when popup over first base scored a runner from third, but that would prove to be the only run that the Saints would allow between the two games.

St. Peter immediately responded in the bottom of the first with a leadoff walk from Cali Cross followed big singles from Nora Whipps and Piper Winters. After a strikeout, Belle Putz drew a bases loaded walk to tie the game before Maddie Kamm hit an infield single to a deep shortstop who was late on the throw to first, allowing both Whipps and Winters to score.

In the bottom of the third, St. Peter would add two more runs when Kamm hit a ground ball to second before a throwing error allowed Auden Anderson and Putz to score.

The defensive highlight of the night came in the top of the fourth after a one-out single from TCU put a runner at first. The next batter hit a sharp liner to first that Devyn Welp was managed to react to and haul in for the out before taking one step to her right to tag out the runner at first for the unassisted double play.

Anderson earned the win in the circle for the Saints allowing just one run on six hits while striking out 10 hitters. Winters paced the offense going 3-3 from the plate while drawing a walk while Kamm was responsible for bringing home four runs.

In Friday’s contest with Stewartville, offense came at a premium with St. Peter managing just three hits, but mistakes in the field doomed Stewartville who spread seven hits out throughout the game.

The lone run of the game came in the bottom of the fourth after Kamm drew a one-out walk. Riley Rubischko put a bunt into play to advance the runner, but the catcher missed the throw to first, allowing Riley to get to first safely while Kamm advanced to third.

Allison Dent then sent a fly ball to center out of reach of the centerfielder that scored Kamm while allowing Rubischko and Dent to reach third and second respectively. After a walk loaded the bases, a strikeout and fly out ended the inning without any furth damage.

Stewartville would get a runner into scoring position once in the final several innings, but a key strikeout stranded that runner at third as the Saints held on for the 1-0 victory.

Welp earned the win in the circle, pitching the complete-game shutout while allowing seven hits and striking out seven batters. Winters, Putz and Dent recorded the three hits for St. Peter in the win.

The Saints are scheduled to return to action Tuesday, May 14, when they travel to Fairmont to take on the Cardinals with first pitch scheduled for 5:30 p.m. They will then close out the season with road games Thursday and Friday against New Ulm and Mound Westonka. Thursday’s game against the Eagles will begin at 5:30 p.m. while Friday’s contest is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
