The St. Peter golfers faced a busy start to the week with the Big South Championship taking place Monday at Dacotah Ridge golf course followed by an 18-hole invite at Montgomery International golf club Tuesday.

The St. Peter boys swept the events, claiming their second Big South Conference title in three years before cruising to first in Montgomery.

“I was so proud of the team’s grit and determination today and happy that they battled the increasing winds and faster greens as the day went on,” said St. Peter boys head coach Neil Doose after his squad claimed the conference championship. “We are playing our best golf of the year, but need to take the next step to reach our team goals.”

The girls team finished fifth in the conference Monday before leading the way to finish first Tuesday afternoon.

In the Big South Championship, the boys team was led by an incredibly consistent day from Kaiden Brovold which saw him score an even par 72 that featured 16 pars, a birdie and a bogey.

“Kaiden almost played “boring golf”,” said Doose. “I was so proud of the way he played today as he hit greens in regulation like crazy and just had tap-in pars all day.”

The score was good enough to finish third overall as Fairmont’s Henry Hartquist (-4, 68) and Marshall’s Jayden Mantei (-3, 69) had amazing days on the course.

Anthony Nicolai finished second for the Saints and sixth overall with a round of 76 that featured 14 pars while Blake Magelee finished seventh overall with a round of 78 that included a pair of birdies and 10 pars. Owen Matejcek rounded out the team scorers for the conference champs, finishing ninth overall with a round of 79 that featured three birdies and six pars.

Ethan Moreau (84) and Korey Lager (85) also competed for the Saints, finishing 24th and 30th overall respectively in the 71 player field.

Five Saints, Brovold (first), Nicolai (fifth), Magelee (sixth), Matecjek (10th) and Moreau (15th), earned All-Conference honors as members of the top 18 golfers in the Big South Conference.

The girls team in the conference championship meanwhile finished fifth with a total score of 405. Kailyn Embacher led the team with a round of 93 that featured a birdie on No. 3, finishing tied for 11th overall. Karli Miller finished 15th with a round of 96 that began with a birdie on hole No. 1.

Rhyan Holmgren finished 20th with a round of 99 while Emmy Remmert rounded out the team scorers with a round of 117. Julia Weber (118) and Baylee Nygard (125) completed the day for St. Peter.

Tuesday’s invitational in Montgomery saw the Saints boys win by 39 strokes over New Ulm with Magelee and Brovold finishing tied for first overall with rounds of 71 or one under par. Magelee recorded an eagle on the par five No. 15 with two birdies and 12 pars.

Meanwhile Brovold recorded six birdies on the day with seven pars to finish under par on the day. Nicolai finished third overall with a round of 75 that featured two birdies and 11 pars while Matejcek finished fourth overall with a round of 78 that featured 13 pars.

Moreau (5th, 80) and Lager (7th, 82) also had phenomenal days despite not scoring for the team as the Saints claimed six of the top seven finishes.

The girls team claimed first in the invite with a total score of 404, five strokes under Belle Plaine. Karli Miller finished tied for first to lead the way with a round of 87 that featured a birdie and eight pars.

Holmgren finished tied for fourth overall with a round of 98 while Embacher (9th, 106) and Remmert (17th, 113) completed the team scoring for St. Peter. Julir Weber (22nd, 123) and Paige Winkelmann (30th, 132) also battled for the Saints.

The boys team is scheduled to return to action Thursday, May 16, when the group travels to Owatonna CC for an invite hosted by the Class 3A Huskies. The boys and girls will then both travel to Waseca Monday, May 20, to compete in a tournament hosted by JWP.
