    Rays come up short against Royals, drop back to .500

    KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Well, that didn’t last long.

    The Rays took six weeks to get back above .500 and didn’t even stay there for 24 hours.

    A 4-2 loss to the Royals on Wednesday knocked them back to even at 43-43 and pushed them to Thursday’s Independence Day rubber game to try to extend their string of consecutive series wins to five.

    Coming off their marathon win on Tuesday — thanks to a 2 ½-hour mid-game rain delay — the Rays grabbed a lead in the first inning Wednesday off former teammate Michael Wacha.
