    How the Rays went in-house to find the draft’s best pitching

    ST. PETERSBURG — If you look at the lists that rank the top prospects in the Rays system, they’re loaded with infielders. The organization did little to change that on the first day of the draft, since most of the best athletes play in the middle of the infield.

    The Rays went with two shortstops out of high school in first-round pick Theo Gillen and compensatory pick Tyler Bell, and then nabbed second baseman Emilien Pitre in the second round.

    The later rounds were where the Rays and the rest of the league saw the chance to make big plays on pitching.
