Erin Turnbull, in center, her neighbor Kristine Kolbus, and Turnbull’s son Deuce, 16, far right, work together to transport a marine friendly concrete artificial oyster reef ball to be placed along the shore line at Maximo Park, Pinellas Point Dr. S. and Sunshine Skyway Lane S., on July 10, 2024, in St. Petersburg. Tampa Bay Watch staff and volunteers are installing 17 tons of shell bags and over 602 oyster balls along the southern shoreline of Maximo Park as part of the Maximo Park Living Shoreline Project, which is the result of a unique partnership between the city of St. Pete and Tampa Bay Watch to fortify the shorelines against erosion in the most eco-friendly way possible. Darlene Clark is a new resident of St. Petersburg. She arrived from the deserts of Las Vegas, and as soon as she saw a volunteer posting involving the word ‘beach,’ she was in, she said.

Clark was one of dozens of Tampa Bay Watch volunteers installing 100 pound oyster-friendly artificial reefs called oyster balls and laying down shell bags at Maximo Park on July 11.
