    Rays lose to Yankees, drop back to .500 as trade deadline approaches

    NEW YORK— The Rays left New York pretty much in the same spot as when they arrived, with their record at .500 and several teams between them and an American League wild-card spot.

    Actually, they might be in a bit of a worse place as they have four fewer games to make up ground and shape the direction their bosses take at the July 30 trade deadline, now just over a week away.

    After an ugly overall performance in Friday’s post-All-Star break opener, the Rays flexed their muscles, hitting four homers in each game in winning Saturday and Sunday.
