SALEM, Ohio (WKBN) — The Salem Police Department’s K-9 division is looking to help other departments with their K-9 unit.

They are holding their third annual K-9 golf outing at Salem Hills on Aug. 17. It will benefit the Salem, Columbiana, Lisbon and Saint Clair Township police departments. K-9 units are fueled by donations for things like equipment and training.

Officer Mike Garber with the Salem Police Department has seen firsthand how K-9s are a benefit.

“The benefits of the K-9 is it’s a force multiplier. It’s a really good tool,” Garber said. “The bad guys, generally, when they see the K-9, they’re like, ‘Okay, we’re done. We don’t want anything to do with that.’ And they’re a great locating tool. That’s their primary purpose. They locate the odor and narcotics where a normal officer can’t.”

There is no room left for more golfers, but they still could use volunteers to help during the event.
