Maroon soccer women ranked 6th
The Roanoke College women’s soccer team has been picked sixth with 110 points in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) preseason coaches’ poll. RC opens the season with a pair of road contest at Greensboro on September 1 and Johns Hopkins on Sept. 4. The Maroons have their home opener against Albion on Sept. 10 as part of the 2022 Roanoke Invitational Showcase. RC will take on Sewanee the next day on Sept. 11. Lynchburg will be the fourth team and will play a pair of neutral site games against Albion and Sewanee at the event.

The Glenvar Middle School football team will play host to the Andrew Lewis Middle School 7th grade team tonight at Highlander Stadium. Game time is 6:30 pm for the border war. Last week Glenvar defeated Clifton Middle, 32-0 as Brody Williams scored three touchdowns and Ranger Swanson had two. The Lewis 7th graders lost to Pulaski Middle, 40-6, on Thursday but bounced back with a 24-14 win over the Read Mountain 7th graders on Monday.

Middle School volleyball teams have Thursday matches
The Glenvar Middle School volleyball team won two matches last week while Andrew Lewis dropped two. Glenvar beat Central Academy in two sets, 25-9 and 25-15, then beat Blacksburg on Monday, 25-18 and 25-14. The Highlanders were scheduled to host Ben Franklin on Wednesday and Cave Spring is at Glenvar tonight.

35th Annual Roanoke Valley Mopar Car Show: The free event will be at the Salem Civic Center Saturday, Sept. 3. Did you know Salem used to be a summer vacation hot-spot? Resorts like Lake Spring Hotel brought visitors from across the country. You can see this jewelry box on display this weekend as part of the Salem Museum’s Hands-On History Saturday program. Lake Spring Hotel was famous for its dances and the lake where visitors could fish and swim. Sadly, the hotel burned down in 1892, but the property still lives on today as Lake Spring Park.

More than 3,600 students returned to school in Salem Monday, with smiles, new notebooks, backpacks and excitement over a new year. “We had a very smooth opening, especially when you consider the effort that went into Salem High ready to open after construction,” said new Salem Schools Superintendent Curtis Hicks, after his first opening day as superintendent.
Virginia Western business science building renamed
ROANOKE – Virginia Western Community College held a ceremony Aug. 23 that recognized the generosity that Edwin C. Hall, of Roanoke, and his family have shown towards the college. During the ceremony, the college renamed its Business Science Building the Hall Family Center for Business Science. The building, which opened in 1988, houses the college’s new networking and cybersecurity labs, the Whitman Theater and the Student Commons.
