SALEM, W.Va. (WBOY) –– If you’re shopping in downtown Salem and you smell something sweet, it’s almost definitely coming from Lincoln’s Cake Therapy.

Owners Amanda and Ben Frix opened the bakery after being inspired by their son Lincoln, and they operate under the foundation of: “to give God all the praise, bake with love and make your day a little sweeter.”

Lincoln was born with a brain bleed and diagnosed with cerebral palsy which led Amanda to start baking in order to help raise money for his treatments.

12 News spoke with Amanda about what inspired the bakery through the progress of Lincoln’s conditions.

“We decided we should do a storefront, we’re getting more and more clients, and so about two years ago we were going to open a bakery, but our little one was diagnosed with stage four kidney cancer. It spread to his lungs and so we actually lived at the hospital for about a year. But by the grace of the good Lord and all the staff at WVU Children’s Hospital, he is now a year in remission and just graduated kindergarten. He’s doing really good,” she said.

Lincoln’s story isn’t the only sweet thing within the bakery. The location offers custom cake options including specialty and wedding as well as a large variety of desserts made fresh like cookies, cupcakes, muffins, canolas, specialty coffees and the fan favorite––cream puffs.

Even Lincoln himself plays arguably the most important role when it comes to making the desserts. Father and co-owner Ben Frix told 12 News that Lincoln is “the CEO and director of quality control.”

Lincoln’s Cake Therapy offers sugar and gluten-free options as well as vegan and soy-free ones so that everyone in the family has something to enjoy.

In August, the bakery plans to offer a “special needs cake therapy night” where children with disabilities and their parents can connect with one another once a month through a relaxing evening of decorating sweet treats.
