SALEM, W.Va. (WBOY) — Nearly two months after the Salem City Council voted to shut it down, Salem EMS reopened its doors on Monday morning at 8 a.m. to once again serve the community.

The service took its first call after reopening at 11:30 a.m. and while emergency crews are back in service, their work is limited for the time being. Crews will only be available in Salem from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. as the service looks to get back to full staff.

The service only runs as a Basic Life Support agency but is working toward being able to run as an Advanced Life Support agency as soon as possible.

“Next steps is hopefully, like I said running as an ALS Agency again and having all four trucks up and running as well, fully certified and hopefully serving the citizens on a 24/7 schedule. We will never stop fighting for what the citizens of Salem deserve when it comes to quick care and quick response times. And we are excited and absolutely happy to be back,” Salem EMS Supply Sergeant Donovan Carpenter said.

In the meantime, Doddridge County EMS has donated some supplies to Salem EMS which will help the service work to get back up and running at full strength. Salem employees told 12 News that if they arrive at a scene that needs more extensive care, they will call for backup.
