SALINA, Kan. (KSNW) — The Kansas Bureau of Investigation says a 25-year-old man was killed in an officer-involved shooting in Salina on Wednesday around 7:20 p.m.
The Salina Police Department says it happened in the 500 block of N. 12th, near Lincoln Avenue. The department said they encountered several subjects, some having warrants, and they were taken into custody.
According to the KBI, a homeowner reported that a 44-year-old Salina man was in a detached garage just east of the home. Officers entered the garage and arrested him for an outstanding warrant. They learned that another man, identified as 25-year-old Jesse D. Wray, was inside the garage.
The KBI says a K-9 officer gave commands for Wray to exit the garage, but he refused, barricaded himself inside, and threatened to shoot officers if they entered. Officers backed away, set a perimeter, and called for the Salina SWAT Team to respond. Kansas Highway Patrol troopers arrived to assist.
While waiting for the SWAT team, the KBI says officers observed a fire and smoke in the garage. The garage door opened, and a woman exited, followed by Wray. Gunfire was exchanged. Salina officers and KHP troopers fired rounds that struck Wray. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:45 p.m. The woman was taken to Salina Regional Health Center and later released.
No officers were injured in the incident. The KBI is conducting the investigation and will present its findings to the Saline County Attorney.
