A 25-year-old Salina man wanted by law enforcement was shot and killed by police Wednesday at a home in Salina, officials say.
Jesse D. Wray died at the scene, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation said Thursday.
Officers from the Salina Police Department were sent about 7:30 p.m. to a home in the 500 block of N. 12th Street in Salina looking for a person who had a felony warrant for their arrest, the department said in a news release.
Officers found several people at the residence who were taken into custody. The person police were initially looking for, 44-year-old Larry J. Wray Jr. of Salina, was found inside a detached garage and was arrested, authorities said.
An officer heard another person in the garage, Jesse, who also had a warrant. Officers yelled at him to come out of the garage. He refused.
“He was holding a gun and made threats to shoot if law enforcement entered the garage,” according to a KBI news release.
Officers surrounded the garage. The Salina SWAT team and Kansas Highway Patrol arrived to assist, the KBI said.
Police noticed fire and smoke coming from the garage and the garage door opened. A woman and Jesse walked out and gunfire was exchanged.
“Officers from the Salina Police Department and troopers from the KHP fired rounds that struck Jesse,” the KBI said.
Jesse was pronounced dead at 8:45 p.m. The woman who walked out with him was taken to a hospital and was later released. Authorities did not say if she was struck by gunfire.
Officials did not say what Jesse Wray’s felony warrant was based on.
Kansas Department of Corrections records show that he was convicted of drug possession, theft and criminal possession of a firearm by a felon in 2018 in Saline County. He was released from prison in September 2023.
The investigation is ongoing and findings will turned over to the Saline County Attorney.
