SALISBURY — Every Independence Day, Americans turn their eyes to the sky in anticipation of a dazzling fireworks display. However, for furry friends, the fireworks shows can be traumatic. According to the American Animal Hospital Association animal control officials across the country see a 30 percent to 60 percent increase in lost pets each year between July 4 and July 6. Res-Q Runner Director Angi Elkins indicated that when animals are in flight or frightened they can often lose their collars. When those pets turn up at animal shelters without an identifiable collar, finding the right owner can be a challenge. One solution is having the animal microchipped. In anticipation of the Fourth of July, the Community Pets Mobile Microchip Clinic his being held at the Rowan County Fairgrounds on Wednesday. The event will take place from 9 a.m to 1 p.m. Having a dog or cat microchip at the event costs $25. Rabies vaccines are also available for $10. The Rowan County Fairgrounds is located at 1560 Julian Road, Salisbury.
