SALISBURY — A lot of life is just being in the right place at the right time.

Thankfully, two off-duty firefighters were just down the road when a kitchen fire broke out Friday morning around 11:15 in the 100 block of Primrose Street.

“We had two off-duty firefighters that live in the neighborhood,” Franklin Fire Chief Michael Spry said. “They actually got in here and put it out with a garden hose.”

The duo are actually a father and son, Don and Cody Clark. In addition serving with Franklin Fire Department, Don is a fire captain with the Salisbury Fire Department. Meanwhile, Cody pulls double duty, volunteering with Franklin and working full-time with the Kannapolis Fire Department.

“Both of them happened to be off-duty today,” Spry said.

At the scene on Friday, Spry indicated that the cause of the fire was still not clear, but said it appeared to have started in the kitchen, adding that most of the damage to the inside of the home was confined to that area.

Spry mentioned that the two occupants who were inside the home at the time of the fire’s onset were able to get out of the home without incident. Additionally, some pets inside the home were able to get out as well.

A representative from the American Red Cross was on scene and confirmed that the occupants of the home would not be displaced as a result of the blaze.

Franklin, Salisbury, Locke, Woodleaf and Ellis fire departments responded to the scene. So did Rowan County Emergency Services Fire Division.
