Per CBS News , Elizabeth Smart’s husband, Matthew Gilmour, is from Aberdeen, Scotland . She met him in Paris while doing Mormon missionary work. When Smart and Gilmour were 24 and 22, they tied the knot in Oahu, Hawaii. To “avoid significant distraction,” Smart changed her wedding plans and “got married in an unscheduled ceremony outside of Utah,” the family spokesman, Chris Thomas, shared in a statement.

While Gilmour regularly features on Smart’s Instagram posts, he seems to have opted to remain out of the spotlight as his Instagram is set to private. Gilmour’s occupation is unknown at the time of writing.

However, the 36-year-old activist wants her kids “to be aware of the world” and “what can happen.” She further said that she wants them to prioritize their safety instead of “worrying about offending someone else.”
