SALT LAKE CITY ( ABC4 ) — Salt Lake City will be bringing back its drone show for both the Fourth of July and Pioneer Day on July 24.

The city said the decision to bring back the drone show comes after a successful inaugural year and offers a “fun, safe, and sustainable way” to celebrate Independence Day and Pioneer Day.

The first drone show will be held on Friday, July 5, at Jordan Park (1060 South 900 West) and a second show will be on Wednesday, July 24, at Liberty Park (600 East Harvey Milk Blvd). Both shows will begin at 10 p.m.

The drone shows will light up the night sky with displays of lights, aerial acrobatics, and choreographed formations of iconic local imagery.

Salt Lake City made the decision in 2023 to replace firework shows with drones . Mayor Erin Mendenhall said the decision was made in part to combat the city’s high fire danger and to alleviate air quality concerns.

“As temperatures rise and fire danger increases, we must be conscientious of both our air quality and the potential for wildfires,” Mendenhall said at the time. “The summer holiday shows are a mainstay for Salt Lakers and we’re excited about adapting to new technology which will provide a safe alternative for our residents and visitors.”

Both drone shows are free and open to all ages. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own food and non-alcoholic beverages but food trucks will also be at the parks.
