SALT LAKE CITY ( ABC4 ) — The Salt Lake City Police Department released new information on Monday regarding an officer-involved shooting from June, including bodycam footage and a 911 dispatch call.

According to an SLCPD news release, investigators are considering the “possibility that the discharge of the officer’s firearm was unintentional.”

PREVIOUS STORY: Two suspects detained after officer-involved shooting in Salt Lake

On June 29, one suspect was shot and another safely detained after the pair allegedly abandoned their vehicle and fled from police in Salt Lake City.

Around midnight, Utah Highway Patrol troopers spotted a speeding pickup truck “with vehicle-equipment violations.” Before police could attempt a traffic stop, the truck drove away and was quickly found abandoned near 5650 West 700 South.

Troopers called for SLCPD K9 backup to track the suspects, and one K9 unit and a patrol officer were dispatched to the scene.

Body camera footage shows police wading through tall grasses with flashlights searching for the suspects. When one of the suspects — later identified as 51-year-old Bobby Joe Caster — was found hidden in the grass, the video shows an officer pulling out a gun and almost immediately a gunshot rings through the audio followed by the officer saying, “Oh s–t.”

The footage captures the other officer yelling, “Let me see your f—–g hands!” and the suspect responding, “He shot me in the hand, he shot me, he shot me.”

Paramedics began attending to the suspect on scene and medical personnel treated him for his injury. He was later taken to the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on a federal hold. The other suspect, identified as Jack Colonna, 39, was also booked in jail on outstanding warrants. Colonna was not injured during the incident.

The SLCPD says there is no evidence that either suspect was armed.

While officials did not release the name of the two officers involved in the arrest, they said both were with the SLCPD and the one who fired their weapon is on administrative leave, as is standard practice after an officer-involved critical incident.

An outside agency is investigating the incident and the SLCPD Internal Affairs Unit is also conducting a separate investigation.

The full video provided by SLCPD has been included below. The shooting happens at the 8:00 mark of the video.
