Utah State cornerback Andre Seldon Jr. has died in an apparent drowning after he was last seen cliff diving into a reservoir. He was 22 years old.

The Cache County Sheriff’s Office announced Saturday afternoon that it had began searching for the body of a young man in Porcupine Reservoir, which is located approximately 80 miles north of Salt Lake City. The individual was spotted diving off of cliffs that surrounded the artificial lake, but did not resurface from the water following one of his jumps.

Divers from the Utah Department of Public Safety discovered Seldon's body at around 9:05 p.m. on Saturday night. A spokesperson from the Cache County Sheriff's Office ruled out possible foul play in his death, stating: “Our investigation leads us to believe this is a tragic accident as multiple witnesses recount the same information.”

Seldon transferred to Utah State this spring after spending the last two seasons at New Mexico State, where he played defensive back for Nate Dreiling - the Aggies' interim head coach and defensive coordinator.

"Our football program is heartbroken to have to endure the loss of one of our own," Dreiling said in an official announcement released by Utah State. "Having had a previous relationship with Andre during our time together at New Mexico State, I can tell you he was an incredible person and teammate. Our condolences and prayers go out to Andre's family as we grieve with them over this tremendous loss."

Vice President and Director of Athletics Diana Sabau expressed a similar sentiment, writing: “Our Utah State University Athletics family is devastated over the sudden death of Andre Seldon Jr. We extend our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, teammates, and all who loved Andre.”

A team captain at New Mexico State, Seldon appeared in 28 games for the Aggies, amassing 98 tackles, two interceptions - including a pick-six - five tackles for loss and 13 pass breakups. After making a national name for himself at Belleville (Mich.) High School, 247Sports' No. 11 cornerback in the 2020 recruiting class committed to Michigan, making two appearances for the Wolverines over two seasons.

"The Aggie community is devastated to hear the news of the passing of Andre Seldon Jr.," New Mexico State wrote in an official statement shared to social media. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends."

Vanderbilt University senior offensive advisor and team consultant Jerry Kill fondly remembered his time with Seldon at New Mexico State. The 62-year-old served as Aggies head coach during the cornerback's sophomore year in 2023.

“I am deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Andre. I will always love Andre like a son,” Kill said in a statement released by Vanderbilt. “His smile lit up every room. His leadership was second to none. Every person that knew him gravitated towards him and his bright and contagious spirit.

“His teammates and I will always cherish the memories we made during our unforgettable time together. My heartfelt condolences go out to every person that was inspired and loved by Andre.”

Michigan coach Sherrone Moore said that he was "deeply saddened" upon learning of Seldon's death, calling the Michigan native "a great young man on and off the field."
