The Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games will take place in Salt Lake City , Utah in 2034, with the city set to host the spectacle for a second time.

The International Olympic Committee took to social media after its membership gave its final approval to its Executive Board’s recommendations as the Games return to the United States for a first time since 2002. The vote on the host city saw 83 approve and with six disapproving and six abstaining.

Announcing the news, their post read: "In ten years, the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games will be hosted in Salt Lake City, Utah . We can't wait to see the best snow and ice sports athletes in action again!"

Previously, USOPC Chief Executive Officer Sarah Hirshland said: "When you think about how many people we can touch with the (LA28) Games and backending the decade with a Winter Games … this very well may be the most important decade of sport in this country, and we see a massive obligation and an incredible opportunity."

The plan for the Salt Lake City Games is for the venues to include Park City Mountain and Deer Valley Resort in Park City. In terms of the other facilities in use, indoor venues are set to encompass the Delta Center in Salt Lake City, Maverik Center in West Valley City, and Peaks Ice Arena in Provo.

The Opening and Closing ceremonies will also take place at Rice-Eccles Stadium, which was used in that guise back in 2002. Meanwhile, the Salt Palace Convention Center has been earmarked as a further venue, while the world's media will be house at The Salt Palace.

Athletes will also be housed at the University of Utah, while accommodation will also be provided for the families of those taking part in the Games in a first for the event. Speaking back in April, Future Host Commission Chair Karl Stoss acknowledged that organizers had been impressed with the bid from the Utah city.

During a visit, he said: "Congratulations to Salt Lake City and Utah. You will become a role model also for the IOC."

Meanwhile, Christophe Dubi, Olympic Games executive director said: "This is a hidden treasure, this city and this region, Everything we’ve seen here, more people than ourselves should know about. … the rest of the world have memories of 2002 but this city has profoundly changed. This story needs to be told."

Jacqueline Barrett , the IOC’s Future Olympic Games Hosts director, added: "There’s a possibility to think wider now, to think how could the Olympic Winter Games here in 2034 be transformative. What surprised me most was the passion that still exists here for the Olympic Winter Games 22 years later in the people, everywhere we went."
